It's never too late, Break the Addiction

Heroin Treatment Center

We want our patients to learn healthy coping mechanisms.

Heroin is an extremely potent opioid drug. It is highly addictive and extremely dangerous. There are 9.2 million users, with over 900,000 in the United States alone. In just one year, heroin caused over 50,000 overdose deaths.

Heroin users feel a rush of energy and euphoric feelings for only a few hours; however, there are many long-term effects that are not so pleasurable.

Short-term effects include:

  • Warm or flushed feelings
  • Heavy sensation in the extremities
  • Reduced sensation of pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Sedation
  • Lethargy
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Grogginess
  • Dry mouth
  • Itchy skin
  • Confusion
  • Slowed respiration and heart rate
  • Light sensitivity
  • Constricted pupils
  • Lower than normal body temperature

Long-term effects include:

  • Decreased dental health marked by damaged teeth and gum swelling
  • Excoriated skin from scratching
  • Severe constipation
  • Increased susceptibility to disease from diminished immune system
  • Weakness and sedation
  • Poor appetite and malnutrition
  • Sleeping problems
  • Decrease in sexual functioning
  • Liver or kidney damage
  • Infectious diseases
  • Brain damage due to lack of oxygen
  • Abscesses
  • Bacterial infections
  • Mental health, such as depression and anxiety
  • Social isolation
  • Memory problems
  • Dependency and addiction
  • Death

Like all substance abuse, prolonged use causes tolerance and dependence, which is the beginning of addiction. When you see someone struggling with abuse, it is important for them to seek help before it gets to the addictive stage. Treating addiction is much harder than treating abuse but Sprout Health Texas is here to help no matter what stage you are at.

We begin each treatment with a detoxification process. This process is uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable, but we will closely monitor each patient’s progress in order to adjust their treatments accordingly.

We offer a wide variety of therapeutic modalities, including the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which helps patients recognize their maladaptive behaviors in order to learn how to positively react to certain situations. We want our patients to learn healthy coping mechanisms.

Sprout Health Texas highly recommends family involvement in therapy as well. Not only does it give us further insight into our patient’s family and health history, but we are able to teach the family about addiction and how to be supportive during such a difficult time.
