Providing insight into disorders

Mental HealthOver 43 million Americans suffer from a mental illness and unfortunately, because of social stigma, only a small percentage seek help at a mental health rehabilitation center. Society and even family members believe that those who suffer should be embarrassed or ashamed of their condition; however, mental health rehabilitation centers want to educate families on mental health in order for them to understand that they may have contributed to their loved one’s illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that mental illnesses are caused primarily by genetics, family history and immediate environment.

In 2010, researchers found a gene, the PBRM1, which is critical for chromatin remodeling, that was among 62 percent of people who suffer from a mental disorder. This research does not prove that disorders are 100 percent genetic; however, it does prove that they are increased due to genetics.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “some research suggests that people with certain genes are more likely to develop” a disorder than others. Although it is not 100 percent that two parents with disorders will pass it on to their children, it does increase the risk of it. In fact, when one parent has a disorder, their child has a 15-30 percent increased chance at developing it.

Family History

In 2009, CNN reported “ […] the more family members you have who have been found to have major depression, anxiety disorders or drug or alcohol dependence, the greater the chances that you will too”. In fact, family history “is one of the most important predictors of outcome”.

Family life, or how people interact with their families, has a lot to do with disorders as well. If children are exposed to physical or emotional abuse, they will eventually suffer from some sort of mental disorder. Other family life factors include:

  • Turbulent upbringing
  • Separation from a parent
  • Mental illness in a parent

Immediate Environment

The immediate environment can have a significant impact on whether or not someone will develop a disorder; these causes have nothing to do with brain functioning or genetics whatsoever, these causes are based off of things that happen in their everyday lives, such as:

  • Prolonged stress at home or work
  • Coping with the loss of a loved one
  • Experiencing a traumatic event

Mental health rehabilitation centers offer programs designed to help treat the mental illness, as well as educate families on the causes, effects and treatments of them. Texas mental health rehab centers offer many different therapies that helps patients regain control of their lives in order to live a healthy and happy life. Therapies include:

  • Group Therapy: Attending therapy in groups allows patients to share their experiences with one another. They are able to give others insight into addiction and how effective treatment can be. It is also important to be around people who understand what they are going through. Group therapy is the best way to create a large network of support which is extremely necessary for a successful recovery.
  • Outdoor Therapy: Some of the best therapy takes place outside, being one with nature. The fresh air, beautiful scenery and warm sun significantly boost motivation and self-esteem. It also allows patients to learn how to expect the unexpected because nothing is controlled outdoors; therapists cannot control the weather or how high the mountain is to climb. Patients learn to handle difficult situations on their own without the dependence of stimuli.
  • Family Therapy: Most people do not realize how much family plays a part in addiction. Their genetics, family history of addiction or interaction with their family may play a huge part in their addictive personalities. Family therapy educates patients and their loved ones about addiction, as well as how to support someone during the difficult process of recovery.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Therapists help patients recognize their maladaptive behaviors in order to replace them with positive coping mechanisms. This therapy helps patients take control of their behaviors in order to live independently from stimuli. It prepares patients to face peer pressure and temptation when they return to their normal lives.

Each therapy offered at a mental health rehabilitation center in Texas provides the tools necessary for patients to learn positive coping mechanisms that help them live free from the grips of their mental illness. The therapies also educate families on how they can support their loved one during the difficult process of learning to control their behaviors and emotions. Through the support and guidance of family, as well as mental health rehabilitation centers, patients can regain control of their lives and live a healthy and happy life.
